Your God is too small!
I awoke from
a dream with the words going round in my head….. Your God is too small.
In the dream
I had somehow been aware of times of need or grief or fear when I had turned to
prayer and yet the words came – Your God is too small. God could not be
conceived or as merely a personal support or guide or means of finding peace or
healing.
Then I had
noted matters with the family as a whole where I had cried out for help and
support – but again the words had come, Your God is too small. God was not just
their to look after those I love and worry for.
I thought of
our community and nation. Times of pandemic and threats of war. And yet the
words repeated, Your God is too small. God is not there to fulfil nationalistic
pride and desires – to support wone nation against another.
I had
dreamed of the poverty and starvation and displacement of people around the
world. But still the insistent – Your God is too small. God is not just about
the human race and its needs and its amazing ability for cruelty and
partisanship.
Then there
was the whole earth. That beautiful blue planet seen in space pictures,
countries I have visited, landscapes, amazing animals, varieties of religious
activity, steams and mountains. Oceans and deserts helping bring the
understanding of how small we are. The power of storms and earthquakes and the
wildness of fires and floods. An earth being wilfully destroyed despite the
knowledge of what is required. Pray for this world but again I heard - Your God
is too small!
In my dream
I travelled to the edges of the known universe. Billions of stars and galaxies.
Deep spaces bigger than our planet itself. Beauty and light and darkness and
nothingness all combined and linked and operating in unison. Some huge galaxies
dying as new ones were born. Still, I heard the voice – Your God is too small.
If we conceive of any God then God cannot be contained even in our wildest
dreams of the immensity of what we know and are yet to discover.
As we
consider the heavens and the earth – what are people to be to be mindful of.
You are a
tiny part of all this – yet and integral part. Like the swirling stars and
galaxies, you have your own part in the immensity of all that is.
Perhaps that
is the task of our lives – to find our place, our function within all that is,
to recognise that we cannot master any of it and have no right too, but we are
part of it all – intimately connected with everything that is.
And in the
end we will try as we might but will know for certain that our God is too
small. Yet we are part of the energy and majesty of space. Part of our families
and nation and earth. One with the mountains, and streams and all living
creatures. Knowing this connection just might bring us to the deepening love of
all things that we might do our part not to destroy other people, other
nations, out beautiful planet or to see space as yet another thing to be
mastered and controlled rather than treated with awe and respect.
